Per data from Israel, a minimum of 98 Palestinian individuals have perished while detained since October 2023. A human rights group based in Israel has indicated that the real number is almost certainly considerably larger, as a result of hundreds of missing detainees from Gaza.

Updated Statistics

Israeli defense forces most recently revised information on custodial deaths for May 2024, and correctional authorities during September 2024. Analysts documented another 35 fatalities in confinement subsequent to these dates and validated them with Israeli authorities.

Despite the aggregate figure of fatalities charted being substantially larger than previous assessments, it probably fails to capture the entire scope of losses among Palestinians, as stated by the leader of the prisoner monitoring division.

“Even though we are presenting proof for a higher number of casualties than earlier indicated, this is not a full picture,” he explained. “We are certain that there are yet individuals who perished in custody that we don’t know about.”

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Classified government records shows that the majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who lost their lives in jail were ordinary citizens, based on a related examination.

During May of this year, a military intelligence database tracking all militants in Gaza, a list of in excess of 47,000 named individuals, documented merely 21 deaths in detention. By that point, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had lost their lives in prison.

An effort to charge others over a brutal attack involving assault resulted in public rallies and the arrest of Israel’s top military lawyer, with the suspects now demanding that indictments against them are dropped.

No Legal Action

“Regardless of this significant total of casualties, during 24 months not one individual has faced arrest,” the spokesperson noted. “There are no charges over any killing.

“As long as these measures remain in effect, every Palestinian in detention is in danger, also the those in good health, even the juveniles who have no health problems.”

Notable Incidents

Certain fatalities in custody have been high profile, including a senior medical chief who perished in confinement after 120 days in confinement.

An inmate incarcerated with the deceased reported that he was taken to the exercise area by prison staff immediately preceding his death, obviously hurt and exposed from the waist down. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.

Other prisoners who died in Israeli custody stay unnamed. The prison service and military provided researchers with the number of deaths in confinement, and limited further data for example the facility where they lost their lives, but without the prisoners’ names.
