Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

He was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
