Catherine's Yearly Festive Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.

The large audience will listen to a mix of carols, music and readings from stars like award-winning actors.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a message before the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to budding artists backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," the musician remarked. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

Generations Gathering

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for local food charities.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
