Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria

Schools in Nigeria's northern region have often been targeted for armed groups

Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The armed faction breached the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, according to a statement.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Local residents told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.

In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge troubling the locality, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Safety emergency in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with schools suffering the most of the violence.
