McLaren's Lando Norris Secures Debut Formula One World Championship in Abu Dhabi Despite Max Verstappen's Race Win.

With a performance full of nerveless driving, the McLaren driver has won his maiden Formula One world championship by achieving third place at the Yas Marina race. That finish was sufficient for the British driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

He delivered precisely what was needed in an extremely high-pressure contest at the Yas Marina Circuit, featuring a series of bold overtakes, with flawless execution from both himself and his team.

An Important Achievement for Britain and The Team

In taking his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh driver from Britain to accomplish the feat. It concludes the team's drivers’ championship wait, which went back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

This marks a remarkable revival for the Woking-based outfit, since a nadir in the mid-2010s when they twice finished ninth in the standings. The revival has been spearheaded by boss Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an well-drilled team with a race-winning car.

The Story of the Teammates

For his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for much of the campaign, there was clear frustration at faltering in the final third. Several of poor performances and some errors, including a crash in Baku, were expensive. Nevertheless, he finishes the season having shown he is also of champion caliber. To have been so competitive in only his third season in F1, with multiple victories, remains very impressive.

Verstappen too had been exceptional to take the title battle to the wire. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a significant deficit mid-season, he did not quite have enough to overhaul Norris, finishing just two points behind.

Closing it Out with Ruthless Execution

Norris closed out his title with clinical precision to win the championship that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren struggled at the last two races. These included a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.

This represents no little accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during some difficult times, convinced they would come good. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

Norris performed a remarkable job to stick at his task, keeping his cool and confidence even when under the cosh. Having lost the championship lead to Piastri earlier, he still worked at maximising the car's potential.

The Decisive Race

At the start, Verstappen kept his lead through the first corner, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but left Norris under threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris emerge in midfield traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed no signs of nerves in his driving.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars at once, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside line, almost leaving the track.

This moment was looked at by the race officials, with several impossibly tense laps passing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This bold move unimpeded was vital to his championship bid.

Contrasting Fortunes

While Norris was crowned the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in form between the two was pronounced. As the young guns battled over the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Scuderia had been met by enthusiasm but has yielded what was easily his most challenging year ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a top-three finish. He has appeared jaded in the closing races and will look to rebuild over the winter.
