Meteorologists have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Go Ahead In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the weather service.

Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. Temperatures are expected to be low, meaning extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to plan for delays for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Readings Expected to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Advisories Issued

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this signified the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is completely essential.
