The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of the state is experiencing dryness. This milestone comes on the heels of difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified fire dangers and strained its massive agricultural sector.
A Map Shows Zero Drought
A recent update from the national drought tracker illustrated that the entire state is free from any level of drought. This shift was driven by weeks of above-normal rainfall that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their typical levels.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a climate scientist.
Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations
The path to this point included powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, leading to significant overflow, electrical failures, and fatalities. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were deemed experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year eliminated those final dry conditions.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern
Yet, experts warn that the end of drought status is not the same as complete water security. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation show it at only about 70% of the historical norm.
This mountain snow, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Water officials have emphasized that it is not yet time to make predictions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” said a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
While the drought map shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to preserving this hard-won hydrological health during the rest of the year.
