Two Victims Identified in the Providence Campus Incident as Police Continue Manhunt for Killer.

Two students who were killed in Saturday’s mass shooting in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their assailant carried on following the release by Rhode Island officials of the only individual of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.

She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted condolences publicly, saying in part: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.

Details of the Attack

An additional nine individuals were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a police operation at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“There is a killer at large,” declared Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our city”.

The shooter began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official informed the media outlet.

Law enforcement that raided the hotel seized two handguns and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Regarding the nine injured, a single scholar was allowed to go home, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.

A private school, a independent school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at Brown she was a radiant presence in that particular place as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his promising future.”

Broader Statistics

The fatal shooting at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
