While Sunbathers Ran From Violence, Widely-Shared Picture Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the renowned coast as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, like many local residents, detected pops reverberating through the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the road, talking to a couple who had rushed up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that big kit and without footwear … He’s running at something that surely every instinct would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery In the Wake of Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews caring for many victims.

Community Response and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the site of the violence transforming into a impromptu hospital. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen taking action, including rushing into the water to assist people needing help.

After the tragedy, statements of gratitude were shared. A social media message expressed appreciation for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of rescuers later shared a statement, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your kind words and support. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the group wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the belief that it helps those impacted.”

Council Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional lifeguards, stated that the crew performed exceptionally from the second the incident started until late that evening.

“People have shared so many powerful accounts, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“The team exhibit altruism every day in keeping our world-famous coastlines protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that evening should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much positivity we have seen in the face of such evil.”
